DESIGNING TRI

Tri: A Dynamic Triangular Form for Design and Acoustics

Power. Balanced.

Triangles are visually dynamic and powerful in tessellation, as seen in hexagons and honeycombs. There's a lot of shape nesting that expands to be really beautiful and pleasing to the eye. However, traditional three-point triangles can be difficult to work with in abstraction due to the visual sharpness of the points, causing perceived choppiness and discomfort that hugely distracts from the inherent tessellation patterns – they can create a compositional disastser if not properly controlled.

Our product, Tri, is a triangular dynamic form without points. By eliminating these points, we remove the unpleasant tension, bring a steadiness to the triangular form and shift the focus to highlight the elegant registration qualities in arrays.

How did we do it? And why is it so UNIQUE IN THE MARKET?

We've replaced the harsh points with a large radius. The result is a visually pleasing rounded curve instead of edges.

This design is rare due to the difficulty in manufacturing it, but our hand-sewn fixtures have allowed us to overcome this challenge and make the process more efficient. Additionally, this approach is better for the environment as it reduces material waste and inefficiencies compared to metal bodies commonly used for this type of form.

Where is the best place for Tri?

Spaces like lobbies, cafeterias, transitional and intermediate spaces are ideal for Tri — places where there is some motion and activity as opposed to dwelling, resting static space like you want for Quad. Quad could be something where you spend an hour and Tri is more of a space where you're spending ten to fifteen minutes.

Tri’s Design Qualities

I remember the first prototype that was built – it had a zing to it. - Wes

Tri is distinct in its design capabilities, allowing for a different design intention and tone. It brings together the normally contrasting qualities of energy and softness. As a visual tool, it is exciting for the variety of arrays it can construct. Its faces have a magnetic quality and can almost “snap” together without any visual tension thanks to the rounded edges. This large radius also creates a calming effect, slowing down the dynamic energy typically associated with triangles.

Additionally, Tri has an impressive ability to scale – up to almost 9 feet. Tall units, in particular, have an elegant and monolithic quality in a space. Tri also considers negative space like our other products, something that is often overlooked in lighting design. The range of visual applications and the potential for color combinations make Tri a highly exciting product for designers. We're excited to see how it will be used in various settings.

Tri’s Acoustic Performance

Acoustically, Tri is a standout. It is an efficient sound absorber due to its acoustic body made entirely of PET and its unique form that enhances sound interaction. Its triangular shape creates a variety of angles and surfaces for sound waves to be absorbed by. Tri’s acoustic performance is only enhanced by its design and highly configurable modified standard.
